The club was founded on the 19th December 1938 under the chairmanship of the then Town Clerk of Johannesburg, Mr I. Marks with some 1 200 members.
Activities at the club commenced at the headquarters of Patterson Park, with various sections being spread all over the city. It was only in 1951 that the club moved to its present premises. The existing main clubhouse was originally a farmhouse owned by the Geldenhuys family.
Marks Park Sports Club is a vibrant club ideally situated close to the Johannesburg City Centre and the surrounding communities of Melville, Emmarentia, Greenside, Roosevelt Park and Linden, among others. We are also a stone’s throw away from UJ, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Melville Koppies and the Emmarentia Dam. This picturesque ‘Green Belt’ running so close to the largest city in South Africa is a haven for fauna and flora and breathes life into the surrounding suburbs.
The club has become a ‘hot spot’ for annual events like the Spar Women’s Race, and Breakout Events concerts such as ‘Park Live‘ and many other international artists. The club’s vision is to maintain its rich heritage of being a diverse sports club offering a wide variety of sports codes to the local community and the City of Johannesburg employees. We cater for the young and the old and welcome all who would like to join and keep up the club’s traditions.
The mission of the club, and more specifically the sub-sections, is to see the sports codes at the top of their games in the various leagues in which we compete. We have very strong Tennis, Soccer, Rugby and Cricket sections which all compete at top league levels. We would like to see all our sports codes competing with the best in their leagues – an achievable goal with our superb facilities, great coaches, and enthusiasm.
Sport is and has been our business since 1938, and ever since then, we have expanded our portfolio with over 16 sub-sections. From Martial Arts to Dog Training, Croquet, Cricket, Soccer (Junior and 5-aside), Kettlebells, Squash, Archery, Baseball, Wrestling and Dancing, our club welcomes all!
Our pristine venues for hire accommodate everything from corporate conferences to weddings with custom catering solutions. You can also use our bar and restaurant facilities rich with tradition and heritage. Our great conference halls and main bar are both impressive and flexible. In addition, the ambience of natural sunlight and the stunning panoramic view of our lush green fields are awe-inspiring.
